Top 10 list: best dressed rockers of today

The new fashion icons

Some of the best dressed persons today are frontmen of the indie rock scene. These are our absolute favourites.

10. James Righton, Simon Taylor-Davis and Jamie Reynolds (Klaxons)

The Klaxons started the so-called new rave-wave in music, but also when it came to clothing. Suddenly everyone wanted to mix and match colors that you wouldn’t mix when you were into rock. Red with purple? Yes. Blue with orange? Sure. Yellow with red? Of course. Metallic and gold? Yes (even before it became a hit).

The Klaxons were trendsetters, and in front of the band: Jamie Reynold, Simon Tayler-Daavis and James Righton.

 9. Jared Followill (Kings of Leon)

When Kings of Leon first kicked off and made it big, by indie standards, the band got most publicity for their 70s style. Lead singer Caleb Followill had a mustache, long hair, too short shirts and too tight pants. The band  quickly got labeled, as every other cool, good looking, skinny rock band “The Strokes from somewhere”, as many others did as well. Kings of Leon was the Strokes from the south. But, as time evolved, Caleb dropped the lousy, yet cool, mustache and got muscles. He changed from singing about missing erections and screwing in some car, to a little more mature lyrics. And with the lyric shif, the style shifted as well. The band started wearing black, white and grey clothing. Caleb Followill, the youngest member of the band, had always had a good fashion sense, but he really started to shine at this stage. His cleavage grew, his ornaments doubled and his super skinny jeans, like the rest of the band, remained. It got him and the band several pages in the Australian GQ in august 2005,  and a reputation of dressing cool instead of retro.

 8. Josh Homme (QOTSA)

When you are a redheaded male, you’re on thin ice. But if you manage to turn that into a positive thing, you are a genius. Well, the Queens of The Stone Age-singer really knows how to make it work. His superslick apperance, his always trimmed hair and unbuttoned shirts make him look like a sex machine. Nice work, Josh.

 7. Brandon Flowers (The Killers)

As The Killers smash hit cd Hot Fuss sold over 5 million copies, the Killers quickly rose to fame in 2005. Frontman Flowers got known for his use of make up, but no one was surprised. After all, the band is from Las Vegas. Nowadays, three years after, Brandon has a beard, has dropped the make up, and seem a lot more grown up. However, he never lost his good sense of style. His Wayfarers are cool, his use of golden suits are cool and his beard is cool. It all makes the perfect setting for the Vegas-band, and the perfect exuse for Flowers to dress up.

 6. Howlin' Pelle Almqvist (The Hives)

The Swedes have always been good builders in brand marketing. Ikea, Volvo, Ericsson. They are all from Sweden. But lately, their fashion scene have really made a breakthrough. Tiger of Sweden, J. Lindeberg, Fillipa K and Acne are just a few examples of exciting designer labels from Sweden. And then, of course, you have H&M. The Swedes sure know how to dress. No wonder then, that the only (we know) indie rock band that tries to use a 50s style in their clothing line, is from Sweden. The Hives, with vocalist Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist in front, use similar suits, similar ties and similar shoes. Mostly black and white-combination. And it works. Its retro. Its cool.

5. Devonte Hynes (Lightspeed Champion)

The ex-Test Icicle band member Devonte Hynes, now known as the definite of Lightspeed Champion, is pretty far from what you would expect from an afroamerican singer. He plays soft indie ballads in Lightspeed Champion and dress up in skinny jeans, colourful t-shirts and cardigans, even a bow-tie sometimes, and he occacionally tops it all with a noticeable faux-fur hat. And those glasses. Those geeky, yet cool glasses. It all makes a Dev Hynes stand out in the crowd. In a good way.

 4. Jack White (White Stripes / The Raconteurs)

Not since the Ferrarri first launched their finest red automobiles have red been this cool. Jack and Meg White made red and white, red and black and red and red look awesome on their pale bodies. It could seem ridiculous, if it had not been for their addictive riffs, catchy tunes and smart lyrics. But, put together with the music, it worked very, very well. And today, about seven years after their breaktrough album, White Blood Cells, it still works.

 3. Pete Doherty (Babyshambles)

You could criticize Pete Doherty for his drug abuse. Or for his alcohol abuse. But there is three things you cant take away from that man. First, he dates Kate Moss. Second, he makes brilliant music – both the Libertines and Babyshambles serves as proof. And third, he has a very cool style that have influenced several others. A hat, a trenchoat and a very tired skinny hungover rocker never looked this cool. Its is not by accident that Gio-Goi put together a Pete Doherty signature-collections.

 2. Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance)

My Chemical Romance are perhaps the worlds most successful emo rock band,  which basically means that the tunes are emotional, filled with self-doubt, thoughts of suicide, problems and so on. Gerard Way claims that the band is not emo, but when you name a song “I’m not okay (I promise!)”, what do you expect people to call you? Well, anyways, the band hve been made famous for their style, which consists of dark, well fitted clothes. Dolce & Gabanna made their “Welcome to the Black Parade”-wear, which kind of looked like army tunics. And in worked very well.

 1. Julian Casablancas (The Strokes)

Ever since the Strokes were hyped as the next big thing, and were labelled “saviors of rock” back in 2001, they have almost gotten just as much press coverage for the looks and fashion as for their music. The band loves to mix old used garments with new fashion, and they’re style became the defining style for the new garage rock bands that emerged after The Strokes.

Lead singer, Julian Casablancas, have changed style a numerous times. In the beginning he loved the used army jackets you normally get in Camden Market in London, mixed with a tie and pinstriped shirt. Now he wears a tunic as well, just a different one, but he never mixes it with a tie. Instead he wears the black tunic with black jeans and a blac shirt. When he doesn’t wear the tunic, he wears a leather jacket.

It’s a shame that tabloids have almost neglected Casablancas the past couple of years when it comes to cool, laid back rock and roll-style, and focused only on Pete Doherty. Because, even though Doherty may dress well, Casablancas is a tint sharper, and right now: The best dressed rocker around.

Jack White is a good dresser, even tho he doesnt look like one on the pic in this list. Good choice to put Casablancas on top, instead of Doherty
